Manual Lymph Drainage

A gentle but very specialised form of massage used in the management of lymphoedema. This treatment works best when is used in combination with other components of care, such as skin care, elastic compression garments, exercises and multiplayer bandaging.

MLD consists of very light, rhythmic and calming hand movements to stretch the skin and stimulate the lymphatic system. The aim of MLD is to redirect fluid away from swollen areas towards the healthy lymphatics in unswollen areas where fluid can drain back to circulation. It is particularly useful when swelling involves areas of the body where hosiery cannot be worn eg; the armpit, breasts, chest, back, abdomen, genitals, head and neck. MLD also helps reduce hardness of the tissues (fibrosis), which can develop with lymphoedma.

Other benefits of this specialised form of massage include:
  • Promotes healing of wounds, leg ulcers, burns and old scars
  • Assists in conditions arising from venous insufficiency
  • Aids healing process of broken bones, torn ligaments sprains, bruising
  • Chronic sinusitis, arthritis, acne and acne rosacea can be improved
